Electromagnetic waves are energy waves that travel through space, carrying energy and information. They are composed of oscillating electric and magnetic fields.

A brief view of its history:

The history of electromagnetic waves begins in the 19th century:
  • 1865: James Clerk Maxwell proposed a unified theory of electricity and magnetism, predicting the existence of electromagnetic waves.
  • 1887: Heinrich Hertz experimentally confirmed Maxwell's theory by generating and detecting radio waves.
  • Late 19th and early 20th centuries: Scientists like Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla developed practical applications for electromagnetic waves, leading to the invention of radio and wireless communication.
  • 20th century: The discovery of X-rays, gamma rays, and other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum expanded our understanding of these waves and their applications in various fields, including medicine, astronomy, and communication.

Interesting facts:

Cherenkov Radiation: This is a type of electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle travels through a dielectric medium faster than the speed of light in that medium. It's often seen as a bluish glow in nuclear reactors or particle accelerators.

Optical Tweezers:
Using highly focused laser beams, scientists can manipulate tiny particles, such as cells or atoms, with optical tweezers. This technique relies on the interaction between the electromagnetic field of the laser and the particles.

Terahertz Radiation:
This part of the electromagnetic spectrum is often referred to as the "terahertz gap" due to technological challenges in generating and detecting these waves. However, recent advancements have opened up new applications in fields like imaging and spectroscopy.
